When you are load balancing a service it is important to make sure that servers that are receiving the traffic are in good condition to respond. In this article we will address this topic with a couple of mechanisms that HAProxy provides.

In order to enable health checks for each server, at least the check keyword must be placed in the server or default-server lines. The interval between two consecutive health checks will be two seconds and its maximum timeout will be the same value, so if there is no response in that time it will be considered an invalid check. It will consider a server as UP after performing two consecutive valid health checks and it will consider a server as DOWN after performing three consecutive invalid health checks.

It will only read the first bytes of the response. All these parameters can be changed in your configuration. Now, the interesting thing about HAProxy is that it can perform layer 7 health checks, which are a more accurate method when forwarding traffic to http servers. To enable the http check, just use the option httpchk directive within the backend block. In this particular header we have set the host, which is needed to check a virtual host in the target web server, and also the user agent to be able to identify those requests in the logs easily.

By using the http-check expect directive we set a match rule to look for a valid response. This allows you to add new servers without overwhelming them with a flood of requests.

HAProxy is particularly suited for very high traffic websites and is therefore often used to improve web service reliability and performance for multi-server configurations.

Note that both web servers connect to the same database server. Another, more complex way to load balance network traffic is to use layer 7 application layer load balancing. This mode of load balancing allows you to run multiple web application servers under the same domain and port.

Both backends use the same database server, in this example. The load balancing algorithm that is used determines which server, in a backend, will be selected when load balancing. HAProxy offers several options for algorithms. Because HAProxy provides so many load balancing algorithms, we will only describe a few of them here. Selects the server with the least number of connections—it is recommended for longer sessions. Servers in the same backend are also rotated in a round-robin fashion.

This selects which server to use based on a hash of the source IP i. This is one method to ensure that a user will connect to the same server. Nginx is often used in conjunction with HAProxy for its caching and compression capabilities. The layer 4 and 7 load balancing setups described before both use a load balancer to direct traffic to one of many backend servers.Load-balancer servers are also known as front-end servers.

Generally, their purpose is to direct users to available application servers. A load-balancer server may have only the load balancer application HAProxy installed or, in rare cases, it may be an application server in addition to a load balancer, which is not a recommended configuration. Each load-balancer server has its own public IP address typically an Elastic IP address in the case of Amazon EC2 cloudsbut shares the same fully qualified domain name e.

Example: Server A: loadbalancer. All load-balancer servers share the same fully qualified domain name but have unique static IP addresses. If a load-balancer server is unavailable, the request to that server will time out. However, when this happens, most browsers resend the client request to DNS, and the request is directed to the second load balancer in this case.

Once the account has been created you will be offered to add your existing website to Cloudflare.

In the text field enter the domain name of your website. Check that all the information Cloudflare got about your existing web server and DNS is correct. Click 'continue' if all looks good to you.

Don't worry if you later decide to not go with Cloudflare - you can just revert the nameservers to what they were before and then restore your control over the domain. Now Cloudflare makes all those changes required to send all traffic to your domain via the Cloudflare server and you can no longer set any records.

From this point all traffic to your domain goes via Cloudflare. This means your website is protected by Cloudflare now.

How to add Cloudflare in front of HAProxy

Now you see the Cloudflare dashboard in your browser and adding your website behind Cloudflare is done. All traffic between the client and the Cloudflare server is TLS encrypted. The traffic from Cloudflare server to the load balancer is what it was before, encrypted or unencrypted, whatever was installed before. I have used our Loadbalancer.
